Sanskrit Pearl of the day:
सद्भावेन जयेन्मित्रं सद्भावेन च बान्धवान्
स्त्रीभृत्यान् दानमानाभ्यां दाक्षिण्येनेतरं जनम्
- सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार

Transliteration:
sadbhaavena jayenmitraM sadbhaavena cha baandhavaan
strIbhRutyaan daanamaanaabhyaaM daakShiNyenetaraM janam
- subhaaShitaratnabhaaNDaagaara

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Win friends with a good presence; win kinsmen with good presence too; women and dependents by - giving and respect; others through politeness.

Commentary:
How each person is handled has a huge impact on the way the relationship shapes up. And also, the same rule doesn't apply to all relationships either. The way one deals with a friend, is not the same as he would deal with his children. The poet hence says that one has to deal with friends and kinsmen with a good presence. One needs to be calm and composed when dealing with kith and kin, because spoken words and sped arrows can never be taken back. One wrong word can break the relationship for ever. Women are to be treated with respect. Giving is another faculty that one needs to develop, be it with women or dependents. They being the primary care takers, when they are valued, the household runs smoothly. Everyone else should be dealt politely. Rudeness and arrogance isn't appealing to anyone. Be he a king or a common man, arrogance and high strung attitude doesn't sit well with anybody.

Politeness is the art of choosing amongst one's real thoughts! One of the greatest victories one can gain over someone is to beat him at politeness. Adapting it wins many a wins.
