kriyāvadhijñaṃ vyasaneṣvasaktam ।
śūraṃ kṛtajñaṃ dṛḍhasauhṛdaṃ ca

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Goddess Lakṣmī (the epitome of prosperity) will willingly go reside with a person who—is filled with enthusiasm, does not procrastinate, has acumen in his work, is disinterested in vices (like addiction), is brave, has gratitude, and makes firm friendships.

Commentary:
Everyone seeks success and prosperity. Goddess Lakṣmī, the embodiment of all things prosperous, represents this very aspiration. Yet, she is often elusive—rarely comes easily to all.

There is a reason for her fleeting nature. In pursuit of success, many tend to gravitate towards the easy road—laziness, procrastination, ineptitude, distractions, fear, ingratitude, and betrayal. These choices are tempting because they serve selfish desires, providing immediate, though shallow, satisfaction. However, true prosperity is not born from such seeds.

True prosperity is sown in the fertile soil of gratitude and nourished by unwavering persistence. Prosperity flourishes when one aligns with a clear purpose and pursues it with relentless passion. The journey toward prosperity is carved through hard work, resilience, and integrity. It is measured not in fleeting achievements, but in courage and character.

Success is a journey, and prosperity is the reward for every step taken with intention and resolve. A life lived with purpose, passion, and perseverance will naturally unfold into prosperity. When qualities like gratitude, purpose, persistence, and character are embraced, success will come knocking at the door, uninvited but inevitable!

samadṛṣṭiḥ prabhuścaiva durlabhāḥ puruṣāstrayaḥ ॥
- yogavāsiṣṭha, vairāgya

Meaning of the subhAShita:
A wealthy man who is not blamed, a valiant man who is not pompous, a leader who is not prejudiced—these 3 people are rare to find!

Commentary:
A wealthy man, irrespective of whether he gained his wealth by just or unjust means gets rebuked.  He gets blamed for one reason or another—earning unjustly, not doing enough good with his affluence, or being overly lucky!  Rare is a man who gets applauded for his abundance and also his attitude towards his fortune.

If one is courageous, chances are, he is proud of his valiance and recounts his valor every chance he gets to anyone who will listen!  Humility in conjunction with heroism is a rare commodity.  How often do we come across a Rāma or a Hanumān?!

When one has power in his hands, arrogance goes to the head!  Misuse of power, prejudice towards kith and kin, and bias towards the lowly and helpless—these become his main attributes.  It is said, 'a politician thinks of the next election, whereas a statesman thinks of the next generation!'  It is rare to see someone with power in his hands and a level head on his shoulders.  A true leader is one who views all his subjects equally!  This is a virtue of rarity in itself.  He who possesses this is a true statesman.

Inculcate the right traits when blessed with opportunities and privileges.

- viduranīti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
He who does not show even a little contempt towards the weak; handles enemies with an objective; steers clear from having a conflict with the stronger and demonstrates valor—is brave.

Commentary:
Bravery is not defined by physical strength or aggression. True bravery manifests in many forms.

The brave show compassion toward the weak, never looking down on those with less endurance or ability. Their strength uplifts rather than intimidates.

They approach their opponents with tact and wisdom. Possessing power or intellect does not mean they recklessly invite conflict.

Acknowledging the strength of a more powerful opponent is also a mark of courage. The truly brave remain grounded and avoid unnecessary provocation, choosing prudence over ego.

These qualities validate genuine bravery. To be brave is to be free—free from fear, arrogance, and recklessness. Embrace courage, for there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Oh, king, to him who doesn't have strength in his arms and determination in his mind, what can the power of the moon in the sky do?!

Commentary:
If things don't work in one's favor, he will find many reasons to blame for his failure!

One of the easiest and lamest responses is: "The stars are not in my favor!"  The most essential factors for the success of any task are: one's mental ability and physical strength. If one has trust in his own abilities, he is bound to achieve anything.

For the one who does not have confidence in his own prowess or vigor in his muscles, how can the stars and moon, sitting in the sky, influence the outcome?! His physical and mental faculties are always available for him!  How can his star power, moon power, or horoscope help in his achievements or failures?! The moon and the stars are sitting far away in the skies—how can they possibly be factors in his success or failure?!

It is not for the stars to hold our destiny but for ourselves.  Luck matters only to some extent. Hard work, faith, and determination are what drive one toward success.  The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work!

Efforts never fail.  Despite that, if we fail, it is certainly not because of the position of the moon and the stars! The Lord knows the ulterior outcome of everything.   We may not understand the results of our efforts instantly, but it will certainly be what it is supposed to be. Only putting in honest efforts, without giving excuses is in our hands.

Transliteration:
carāṇāmannamacarāḥ daṃṣṭriṇāmapyadaṃṣṭriṇaḥ ।
ahastāśca sahastānāṃ śūrāṇāṃ caiva bhīravaḥ ॥
- manusmṛti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Food for the mobile (deer, etc) are the immobile (grass, etc); for a predator (with sharp teeth, like lion, tiger, etc) are those without sharp teeth (deer, etc); hand-less (fruit, vegetables) are (food) for those with hands (humans); and for the brave, it is the coward.

Commentary:
The poet has deeply analyzed society and its functioning.  He makes a fair observation and quotes some timeless truths—Deer can go from one place to another, but they eat immobile grass. Carnivores, who have sharp teeth, eat deer which do not have sharp teeth. Humans have hands and their food is fruit and vegetable, which do not have hands. Similarly, the brave have courage and feed on those who do not have courage!

A tiger will never attack another tiger. A deer will never eat another deer. People are supposed to eat vegetarian. (That is a different topic altogether.) Even if they are eating meat today, it is because they have attained more power in their hands (in the form of ammunition). They can eat other animals too, simply because they have conquered their fear of the animal. Hence, if being harassed or bullied by a stronger person, one should not simply sympathize with himself and play the victim. That is why it is said, "He is not a victim of the bullier, but a victim of his own cowardice!"

Whether we like it or not, this happens in the world more often than not! If one doesn't want to offer himself as food for the ones with more strength, he has only one choice—he must embrace courage himself. At the same time, strength is not for bullying others. It should be accompanied by compassion and ethics.

Do not be a coward and become food for bullies.  Also, people with real merit use their strength for the benefit of others and do not make others feel insignificant!

Transliteration:
śateṣu jāyate śūraḥ sahasreṣu ca paṇḍitaḥ ।

- vyāsasmṛti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Among a hundred a brave one is born, among a thousand a scholar, and among ten thousand an orator.  Does a giver (even) exist or not?!

Commentary:
Not everyone born is brave enough to tackle all kinds of tasks. People have phobias ranging from claustrophobia (fear of enclosed small spaces) to hydrophobia (fear of water) to a simple triskaidekaphobia (fear of number 13)! Hence, a truly brave person is one in a hundred.

Anyone can be educated, but a true scholar is one in a thousand.

'Oration' is a skill in itself. One could be the most knowledgeable person, but when asked to present his ideas, he could become speechless!  Someone hilariously said, 'I'd rather be in the casket than give the eulogy!'  Fear of public speaking is that intense!  Not everyone has a flair for it.  One in ten thousand is born a good orator.

Then, the poet suspects if a true giver has ever been born or not! A true giver is one who 'gives and forgets' without prejudices. If such people are rarely born, then how can anyone write statistics as to "one in how many are born?!"

This is one verse where the poet would be pleased to be disproved!  Being generous is a rare trait and unfortunately, not many people inculcate it.  No one has ever become poor by giving. So, give and give generously!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Struck by the winds, mountains move willfully during the apocalypse. But even in difficult times, the mind of the steadfast remains unperturbed.

Commentary:
The mountains are extremely steady and immobile, yet in an exceptional scenario, they lose this defining trait of theirs. Gusty winds will make them yield and mountains will move during an apocalypse. All their tenacity will be squashed to an obscure nothing when annihilation is underway.

However, those who are steadfast, brave, and courageous, will remain strong—no matter the circumstances. Impending hardships and calamities only make them stronger. There is no exception! Such is the strength of their willpower. Their minds remain steady, unperturbed, and immensely strong. For, if the mind succumbs to hardships, it just hijacks the person like a twig of grass caught in a whirlwind.

Keep your focus, remain steadfast, and dig your roots deep!

Transliteration:
āpadi mitraparīkṣā ca śūraparīkṣā ca raṇāṅgaṇe ।

Meaning of the subhAShita:
A friend's testing ground is calamities; the brave are tested on the battlefield; the test for a family is in its humility; and, character is tested in times of poverty.

Commentary:
One might have a plethora of friends whom they hang out with and many more who would want to get to know him. But the true testing ground for the friendship is in times of trouble. The true colors of all friends surface the minute he is in a calamity. The person who stands by him through thick and thin is his one true friend.

Talking about courage, and even training in martial arts doesn't make one brave. A person's valiance comes to light when he has to face real circumstances and fight a battle on a battlefield. That is his real testing ground.

A family's worth is not gauged by possessions, wealth, friends, and foes. The real test for a family is its value system. The kind of culture and moralities that are imbibed by their children speak volumes about the state of affairs in the family!

One can be of great character in pleasant times. When he has all the riches in the world, it is easy for a person to follow the rules, do good to others, be cheerful, etc. But when the materialistic riches are gone, there is a scarcity of resources, and there is no fallback, the mettle of the person's character is then put to the real test.

Keeping moral grounds under all circumstances takes courage and character!

Transliteration:

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Industriousness, adventurousness, patience, wisdom, strength, courage - wherever these 6 (qualities) are operative, Gods are helpful.

Commentary:
Even Gods do not help the non-zealous and lazy!

If a person has the zeal to work; is patient enough to deal with situations as they come; and uses his wisdom, strength, and courage - only then shall the Gods help.

Like they say, 'success' is 90% perspiration and 10% luck. The 10% of luck will be useful only when one is ready to perspire!  But when not in the right direction, perspiration will only lead to futile efforts.  One's industriousness counts only when accompanied by adventurousness, patience, wisdom, strength, and courage.  When these 6 attributes come together, even Gods have no choice but to be on their side and bless them with success!

Chances come and go in everyone's life. But only the one with all the 6 qualities mentioned above will be able to seize opportunities and make the best of them.

Can't blame destiny for our lack of readiness after all!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Whether the astute of morality commends or blames them; whether wealth comes to them or leaves them at will; whether death comes to them right now or in another era—the brave will not take a step away from the path of righteousness.

Commentary:
No compromises!

The brave (dhīra) will not be deterred from their path of virtue for any reason, whether they are criticized for their deeds, applauded, or blamed. Wealth is not a factor either—it could accumulate or dissipate. Death doesn't scare them—whether yama (Lord of death) comes right here, right now, or in a whole other era, it won't put a dent in their determination! They will still act as per their moral standards and continue to shine.

External factors do not affect the integrity of the inner self. It takes courage to heed one's inner voice and not be carried away by fleeting, momentary pleasures. Wisdom is knowing the right path to take.  Integrity is to actually take it!  No matter what happens, the path of virtue should not be given up, because it is the only path that takes one to peace.

Meaning of the subhAShita:
No coronation or ritual is done by animals; Acquisition (of territory) due to natural prowess makes him King of the jungle.

Commentary:
"If you want to know someone’s mind, listen to their words. If you want to know their heart, watch their actions."

A lion majestically roaming in the jungle did not have a crowning ceremony, nor were any rituals performed by the other animals for him. He doesn't even have to be declared as the 'King of the Jungle'. He marks his territory in the jungle just by his majestic roar.  When he roams, all the other animals hide!  They all know him through his power, courage, valor, and fearlessness.  They know he is the rightful king! Such should be the effect of our actions.

Whatever be the quality: bravery, piety, generosity, nobility, or intelligence, the asset should be expressed through its respective deeds rather than just speech.

Actions speak louder than words.  Let actions speak for themselves!
