Sanskrit Pearl of the day:
पात्रे त्यागी गुणे रागी संविभागी च बन्धुषु ।
शास्त्रे बोद्धा रणे योद्धा स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥

Transliteration:
pātre tyāgī guṇe rāgī saṃvibhāgī ca bandhuṣu ।
śāstre boddhā raṇe yoddhā sa vai puruṣa ucyate ॥

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Gives to the deserving, inspired by noble qualities (in others), shares with kin, knowledgeable in the scriptures, courageous on the battlefield—such a person is called a man.

Commentary:
The true measure of man lies not in the power he holds, but in what he chooses to do with it.  These are the characteristics that make a man a gentleman.

It is not enough for him to be content with little or to be born into privilege. The mark of a good man is not in his accumulation, but in his willingness to share—generously and humbly—with those who are deserving. This is the essence of goodness.

A man of true character recognizes that it is his character, above all, that defines him. It is through the cultivation of this character that he gains the ability to see and honor the good in others. Such insight, in turn, propels him toward continued self-improvement.

In giving, we receive far more than we give away. Sharing with our kin not only creates abundance, but it reveals the heart of a compassionate spirit. The more we share, the more we find ourselves enriched—by both the world and the depths of our own humanity.

Every man is born with the same potential and the same innate gifts. But it is through the pursuit of wisdom, often found in sacred teachings, that a man becomes refined, cultured, and truly whole.

True courage is not the absence of fear, but the resolve to press forward even when one’s strength is spent. It is not the power of the body that matters, but the strength of the spirit that carries a man through dark times. In moments of crisis, it is the courage to face adversity with dignity and valor, that defines his greatness.

True strength is not in a man’s attitude or bravado. It lies in the standards he holds himself to and in the integrity with which he lives. These are the traits that mark a man of a higher caliber. It is far more valuable to think as a man of action and to act as a man of thought. Education, wealth, or social standing—these things do not make a man. It is the virtues he embodies and the character he builds, that shape his legacy.

Sanskrit Pearl of the day:
अग्रतश्चतुरो वेदाः पृष्ठतः सशरं धनुः ।
इदं शास्त्रं इदं शस्त्रं शापदपि शरदपि ॥

Transliteration:
agrataścaturo vedāḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ saśaraṃ dhanuḥ ।
idaṃ śāstraṃ idaṃ śastraṃ śāpadapi śaradapi ॥

Meaning of the subhAShita:
In front (in his mouth), are the 4 Vedas.  Behind him are bow and arrows.  These are scriptures, these are weapons.  (Evil-doers are vanquished) with curses also, arrows also.

Commentary:
This verse extols the glory of Bhagavān Paraśurāma, the sixth incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu. Known for his fierce eradication of corrupt Kṣatriyas, Paraśurāma is said to have vanquished evil 21 times—sometimes with weapons, other times with His curses. His legend is not only a testament to divine power but also to His unwavering commitment to uphold righteousness.

With this backstory, what lesson can we draw from this verse? When the security and well-being of our world are under attack, we must not hesitate to use all means at our disposal—whether intellect or force—with śāstra or śastra, to protect it.

When danger rises on the horizon, we cannot afford the luxury of hesitation or retreat. We must face it head-on, with full resolve and every ounce of our energy. To do otherwise is nothing short of cowardice.

Those who stand at the front lines—warriors, leaders, or protectors—must embody a blend of tact, courage, and tenacity. The defense of the nation requires not just strategic thinking but also the willingness to act with force and ferocity when needed. The war front is not the time for passivity.

Protection of one’s safety and security is not optional; it is an absolute duty and way of life. Only by guarding these steadfastly can we ensure a future worth living.

Sanskrit Pearl of the day:
यत्रोऽत्साहसमारम्भः यत्रालस्यविहीनता ।

- पञ्चतन्त्र, मित्रसम्प्राप्‍ति

Transliteration:
yatro'tsāhasamārambhaḥ yatrālasyavihīnatā ।
nayavikramasaṃyogaḥ tatra śrīracalā dhruvam ॥
- pañcatantra, mitrasamprāp‍ti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Where there is zeal in the effort, where there is an absence of indolence, there, in the conjugation of humility and courage, wealth is certain to be steady.

Commentary:
Zeal is the secret ingredient that transforms any task into a smoother, more enjoyable endeavor. When one undertakes a task with enthusiasm and passion, it inspires and energizes those around them, creating a ripple effect of eagerness and determination to reach the goal—faster and better. However, maintaining zeal in the face of obstacles and setbacks requires immense courage and resilience.

It is often said that zeal suits the wise, yet it is most frequently found in fools. Why is that? Because without proper direction, even the most energetic efforts can become futile. Zeal without wisdom is like a ship without a compass—full of potential but headed nowhere. When energy is directed with purpose and clarity, there is no room for indolence. And indolence, no matter how sophisticated the term may sound, is nothing more than laziness in disguise—an attribute that serves no one.

True zeal must be coupled with wisdom, which brings humility—a vital trait of the truly courageous. When humility and courage unite, they pave the way for boundless prosperity. Prosperity, in turn, fosters abundance, and abundance leads to wealth—not just in material terms but in character and fulfillment as well.

So, for those aspiring for success and wealth, the formula is simple yet profound: nurture zeal, channel it with wisdom, embrace humility, and walk the path with courage. With these attributes, there are no limits to what one can achieve!

Sanskrit Pearl of the day:
बुद्धिर्यस्य बलं तस्य निर्बुद्धेस्तु कुतो बलम् ।

Transliteration:
buddhiryasya balaṃ tasya nirbuddhestu kuto balam ।
vane siṃho madonmattaḥ śaśakena nipātitaḥ ॥
- cāṇakya nīti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
He who has wisdom has strength. Where is that strength for the foolish? The intoxicated lion in the forest got thrown down by the rabbit. (In the Panchatantra story of The Lion and the Rabbit.)

Commentary:
One doesn’t always need physical strength to overcome an opponent. Often, a bit of extra wisdom is all it takes to turn the tide in one’s favor. With the ability to think quickly and strategically, a person can navigate even the most challenging situations.

In a story from the Panchatantra, a small hare defeats a mighty lion through cleverness. The hare convinces the lion that another lion, claiming to be the true King of the Jungle, resides in a well. The lion, unable to recognize his own reflection in the water, leaps into the well to confront the "other" lion, ultimately meeting his demise.

Even physical power is rendered useless without wisdom. One must know how to wisely direct their strength, or else their efforts will be in vain.

Victory does not always belong to the strongest. It belongs to the wisest!

- subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāra

Meaning of the subhAShita:
So what if one's wealth is blossoming even without his effort?! Even an old bull can graze the grass that becomes available by chance!

Commentary:
Luck shouldn't be the sole driving force behind the prosperity of one's wealth! If his wealth is flourishing without effort, there is nothing great about it. He might have inherited it abundantly, or his investments might be reaping tremendous benefits. But if he is not putting in hard work, dedicating his heart and soul towards the betterment of himself and society, that prosperity is to no great avail!

The poet says, even an old bull will graze the grass that becomes 'available' by chance. No applause is required for the bull's effort in 'earning' that meal! The same holds true for someone who puts in no effort towards thriving his assets or flourishing his property.

Only he who strives hard, as well as works honestly and diligently gets to be lauded for his prosperity. One's assets and wealth should prosper only as a byproduct of his efforts and not just due to mere luck or chance!

Transliteration:

- cāṇakya nīti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
(One) should fear fears, only as long as the fears are awaited. Upon seeing the onset of fear, (he) should beat it without a doubt.

Commentary:
The biggest thing one fears is, fear itself!

No one wants to give an open invitation for their own fears. Dreaded circumstances are better kept at bay. Be it any kind of phobia, big or small, everyone has their own fears.

However, this fear is valid only until the onset of the feared situation itself! One should certainly try all the tricks in his book to avoid those dreaded circumstances.  But sometimes, it is not possible to ward off the trepidations despite all efforts. When that happens, he should most certainly keep his fear aside and fight it off with all his might. No excuses, no stone unturned! It becomes his prime duty to get himself out of the fearful situation, despite the fear! Thinking will not help overcome fear, action will.

It is the first step which is always the hardest! Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in doing so. This eventually, aids in vanquishing the fear altogether.

FEAR can be connotated as—Forget Everything And Run (or) Face Everything And Rise!  The choice is ours.

Transliteration:

śaktiḥ pareṣāṃ paripīḍanāya ।
khalasya sādhorviparītametat
jñānāya dānāya ca rakṣaṇāya ॥

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Knowledge is for argument, wealth is for insolence, strength is for tormenting others—evil people are opposite of the noble (who use the) same for awareness, giving, and protecting (respectively).

Commentary:
Possessions are not the problem, it is how they are put to use that cause concern!

Knowledge is applied for different purposes by different people. Evil individuals apply their entire knowledge base to argue with others and to show off their prowess, whereas noble people are interested in learning more for their own awareness and becoming better people than they were yesterday.

Money in an evil man's hand makes him arrogant and reckless. He walks around with the notion that the entire world is under his rule and everyone else is meant to serve him. That same asset in a noble person's hand will be used for the benefit of others. His giving nature makes the resources available to those in need.

Strength is a faculty that can be dangerous when placed in the wrong hands—or rather, on the wrong shoulders! Evil individuals use their strength to torture and torment others; they are entertained by seeing others in pain and will not hesitate to use it for the wrong purposes. Whereas, noble people use the same strength to help the weak, and to make sure they are protected and taken care of.

No evil can happen to a good man, either here or hereafter. His goodness won't die with him either. The seeds he has sown outlive him and benefit society long after he is gone. This makes the world a better place to live in!

carāṇāmannamacarāḥ daṃṣṭriṇāmapyadaṃṣṭriṇaḥ ।
ahastāśca sahastānāṃ śūrāṇāṃ caiva bhīravaḥ ॥
- manusmṛti

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Food for the mobile (deer, etc) are the immobile (grass, etc); for a predator (with sharp teeth, like lion, tiger, etc) are those without sharp teeth (deer, etc); hand-less (fruit, vegetables) are (food) for those with hands (humans); and for the brave, it is the coward.

Commentary:
The poet has deeply analyzed society and its functioning.  He makes a fair observation and quotes some timeless truths—Deer can go from one place to another, but they eat immobile grass. Carnivores, who have sharp teeth, eat deer which do not have sharp teeth. Humans have hands and their food is fruit and vegetable, which do not have hands. Similarly, the brave have courage and feed on those who do not have courage!

A tiger will never attack another tiger. A deer will never eat another deer. People are supposed to eat vegetarian. (That is a different topic altogether.) Even if they are eating meat today, it is because they have attained more power in their hands (in the form of ammunition). They can eat other animals too, simply because they have conquered their fear of the animal. Hence, if being harassed or bullied by a stronger person, one should not simply sympathize with himself and play the victim. That is why it is said, "He is not a victim of the bullier, but a victim of his own cowardice!"

Whether we like it or not, this happens in the world more often than not! If one doesn't want to offer himself as food for the ones with more strength, he has only one choice—he must embrace courage himself. At the same time, strength is not for bullying others. It should be accompanied by compassion and ethics.

Do not be a coward and become food for bullies.  Also, people with real merit use their strength for the benefit of others and do not make others feel insignificant!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Struck by the winds, mountains move willfully during the apocalypse. But even in difficult times, the mind of the steadfast remains unperturbed.

Commentary:
The mountains are extremely steady and immobile, yet in an exceptional scenario, they lose this defining trait of theirs. Gusty winds will make them yield and mountains will move during an apocalypse. All their tenacity will be squashed to an obscure nothing when annihilation is underway.

However, those who are steadfast, brave, and courageous, will remain strong—no matter the circumstances. Impending hardships and calamities only make them stronger. There is no exception! Such is the strength of their willpower. Their minds remain steady, unperturbed, and immensely strong. For, if the mind succumbs to hardships, it just hijacks the person like a twig of grass caught in a whirlwind.

Keep your focus, remain steadfast, and dig your roots deep!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Has many desires; is satiated with little; sleeps deeply; quick to alert; faithfulness to the master; and courage—these 6 efficacies of a dog are honorable.

Commentary:
There is a lesson to learn from every being!

Actually 6, from a dog. A dog has many desires and eats well when food is offered. But if there isn't any food, he is just as happy. He is a sound sleeper, yet he stirs at the slightest noise. He is ever faithful to his master. The master's own kith and kin may leave his side, but the dog he fed will never leave him. Unlike some humans, backstabbing is a concept unknown to him. He is brave and will risk his life if required, to save his master.

Doesn't philosophy tell us to be happy with what we have?! Doesn't philosophy tell us to be aware and alert in the mind always?! Faithfulness is never put down in any school of thought. Courage is of course needed, not just for survival, but for venturing out into the unknown as well. Hence, there are valuable lessons to be learnt from every being, even a dog.

Great is his soul, who can recognize the greatness in another being, irrespective of his lineage, social stature, acquaintances, or even if it belongs to a different species! There is something of value in everyone.

Meaning of the subhAShita:
Industriousness, adventurousness, patience, wisdom, strength, courage - wherever these 6 (qualities) are operative, Gods are helpful.

Commentary:
Even Gods do not help the non-zealous and lazy!

If a person has the zeal to work; is patient enough to deal with situations as they come; and uses his wisdom, strength, and courage - only then shall the Gods help.

Like they say, 'success' is 90% perspiration and 10% luck. The 10% of luck will be useful only when one is ready to perspire!  But when not in the right direction, perspiration will only lead to futile efforts.  One's industriousness counts only when accompanied by adventurousness, patience, wisdom, strength, and courage.  When these 6 attributes come together, even Gods have no choice but to be on their side and bless them with success!

Chances come and go in everyone's life. But only the one with all the 6 qualities mentioned above will be able to seize opportunities and make the best of them.

Can't blame destiny for our lack of readiness after all!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
No coronation or ritual is done by animals; Acquisition (of territory) due to natural prowess makes him King of the jungle.

Commentary:
"If you want to know someone’s mind, listen to their words. If you want to know their heart, watch their actions."

A lion majestically roaming in the jungle did not have a crowning ceremony, nor were any rituals performed by the other animals for him. He doesn't even have to be declared as the 'King of the Jungle'. He marks his territory in the jungle just by his majestic roar.  When he roams, all the other animals hide!  They all know him through his power, courage, valor, and fearlessness.  They know he is the rightful king! Such should be the effect of our actions.

Whatever be the quality: bravery, piety, generosity, nobility, or intelligence, the asset should be expressed through its respective deeds rather than just speech.

Actions speak louder than words.  Let actions speak for themselves!

Meaning of the subhAShita:
The following are the five (types of) imperishable treasures, that can't be stolen by thieves—Integrity, courage, activity, erudition, (and) a congregation of friends.

Commentary:
There is no point in collecting lots of wealth, assets, etc. They are all perishable and can be stolen easily. But the most valuable assets for a person are:
  1. Integrity—character, dignity, conduct, morality
  2. Courage—bravery
  3. Activity—alertness, productive attitude
  4. Erudition—scholarship, education
  5. Collection of friends—friends accumulated, acquired, or earned
Whatever be the name used, these 5 are the most valuable and imperishable treasures. They never diminish with age. And the best part is, they can never be stolen by anyone.

Earn the right kind of wealth! Ordinary riches can be stolen, but these real riches cannot be. So, it is better to surround yourself with assets than liabilities.
