अनुकुरुतः खलसुजनौ अग्रिमपाश्चात्यभागयोः सूच्याः ।
विदधाति रन्ध्रमेकः गुणवानन्यस्तु पिदधाति रन्ध्रम् ॥
- सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार
Transliteration:
anukurutaḥ khalasujanau agrimapāścātyabhāgayoḥ sūcyāḥ ।
vidadhāti randhramekaḥ guṇavānanyastu pidadhāti randhram ॥
- subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāra
Meaning of the subhAShita:
As if taking after the example of a needle's front and aft ends, the evildoer and good person (conduct themselves). (The evil) one makes a hole while the other noble one shuts it close.
Commentary:
When a needle is used to sow, the front end of it makes a hole in the material so that it can get through. But as the needle passes through, the aft end - which carries a hole in itself (for the thread), closes the hole in the material behind it!
Similar is the conduct of an evildoer versus a good person. An evildoer would not hesitate to put a hole in something to achieve his purpose. He could be spoiling someone's belongings; someone's trust; or worse, the resolve of another person. As long as his ends are met, he is unperturbed!
On the contrary, a good-hearted being would take the hardships onto himself and put someone else's misery to rest, silently. He doesn't blow a trumpet about his deeds. Instead, he contributes his best quietly.
Isn't the difference between the two, exactly the same as the difference between the front and aft ends of a needle?
It is better to be good than evil!
